Disability Athletics

The Playground to Podium project came to an end in March 2013. The programme has been a stimulus for the development of disability athletics across the country with support for clubs and coaches to be more inclusive, a significant increase in the number of disabled athletes taking part and notably 2 athletes making the GB team for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

Using the legacy of Playground to Podium and the 2012 Paralympic Games England Athletics have made a continued commitment to support and develop athletics opportunities for disabled people.

Our Inclusion Policy was produced as part of England Athletics' commitment to ensure that all athletes are able to participate equitably within athletics. England Athletics will continue to develop a focus on inclusion, not exclusion, and ensure that it provides appropriate advice to affiliated members to ensure that disabled athletes can participate as fully as possible within athletics events. England Athletics will seek to ensure that it complies with the Equality Act 2010 and encourage its affiliated members to do so.   Click here for our Inclusion Policy

MAY 2017 ONE

Dear All,

I have been made aware of an opportunity for clubs to apply for funding through Tesco’s which may be of interest to your club. Bags of Help is a local community grant scheme where the money raised from the 5p bag charge is being used to fund thousands of local projects in communities across the UK. Projects being supported range from improving community buildings and outdoor spaces to buying new equipment, training coaches or volunteers, and hosting community events. Tesco’s are working with Groundwork who are administering the applications. Groundwork are an environmental charity who work across the UK helping communities find practical solutions to the challenges they face.

For more information about the Bags of Help initiative, please visit the following link:

https://www.tesco.com/carrier-bags/

The types of projects funded will be very broad and will cover the direct costs needed to deliver the project, this could range from:

  • Purchasing items which will benefit local community groups such as sports kit, specialised medical equipment, art and crafts materials, spades, litter pickers, camping equipment.
  • Improvements to a building that benefits the local community such as a Scout or Guide hut, church or village hall, changing facilities for sports.
  • Developing an outdoor space play area, allotment, park, school grounds, woodland or wildlife area.
  • Running a community event or activity such as fun runs.

To make an application, please visit the following link:

Additional practical activities will explore hurdle mobility drills with a focus on how to develop hip mobility, knee stability and coordination. These types of drills are essential and applicable to all event groups. The day will also look at strength pattern progressions covering exercises such as squats, Bulgarian squats, Romanian deadlifts, hip thrusts and other hamstring conditioning exercises. Coach In Running Fitness courses

We have recently had several requests from LiRF leaders in Norfolk who are keen to progress to the next step and complete the Coach In Running Fitness Course. We are currently looking to establish demand for a CiRF course in the area, since if there is suitable demand to make a course viable then a course can be organised to take place in Norfolk to provide a local opportunity to complete the qualification. Clive Poyner (Athletics Norfolk) is currently collating expressions of interest from leaders keen to attend the CiRF course therefore if this is of interest to you please e-mail Clive with your name and club at clivepoyner@talktalk.net

If you have any questions about coaching courses or the new RunTogether group running programme then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Just a quick reminder of the Movement Skills workshop taking place on 12th November. If you are a lead club contact please could you pass on details to any run leaders, coaching assistants or coaches in your club that may be keen to attend. Full details are included below:

Movement Skills Workshop 1

Date: Saturday 12th November

Time: 10am-4pm

Venue: Sprowston Community College, Norwich

Open to LiRF qualified leaders, coaching assistants and fully qualified coaches.

Cost: £15

Bookings: Online booking at: https://www.ulearnathletics.com/moduleEvent/84084

The Movement skills workshops are aimed at assisting all coaches, regardless of their qualification level, or the ability/age of the athletes they are working with – from the 12 year old multi eventer, to the senior International Discus thrower, to the recreational road runner attempting their first 10km race. These sessions, with their blend of theory and practical are designed to stimulate a better understanding of the crucial movement patterns that underpin all running, jumping and throwing activities that form the basis of athletics. Then, to propose interventions that are not only designed to improve an athlete’s performance, but also to minimise the occurrence of injury. Key exercise progressions include multi-jumps (plyometrics), multi-throws (medicine ball conditioning), running drills and movement patterns such as squatting and lunging.

If you have any questions, or require any further information, then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Tania

JUNE 2016 Two

(Click HERE for JUNE 2016 One)

Dear All,

Please see the below e-mail from Suffolk Sport which provides details of the new topcoach academy which provides opportunities for both new and experienced coaches to access a series of coach development workshops. In addition, please also see attached details of Javelin, Long jump and triple jump flying coach visits taking place in Colchester, Braintree and Chelmsford as well as a guide running workshop in September for leaders/volunteers keen to help support visually impaired runners. If you are a lead club contact, please would you kindly circulate details to any coaches who may wish to attend.

Topcoach Academy

Dear Coach

Suffolk Sport are proud to announce the launch of Topcoach Academy and want you to be part of something special. Suffolk Sport are in the process of recruiting the first cohort of coaches/instructors to benefit from what is a unique approach to workforce development. Our aim is to have everyone signed up by the end of August 2016 to start accessing a range of CPD, networking and mentoring opportunities from the end of September 2016.

Topcoach Academy  is Suffolk Sports flagship programme to support established, newly qualified and those just interested in coaching or instructing. Suffolk Sport, along with employing and delivery partners from across Suffolk have seen that to encourage more people to get active, we need a ‘workforce’ that is ready to meet the challenge. If you are willing to commit to being part of Topcoach Academy , you will be provided with dedicated support and innovate training that will improve your skills as leader, help you to provide a more appropriate offer to your participants and enable you to work with likeminded individuals from across the county.

It is our aspiration that the make up of topcoach academy is equally distributed between male and female, volunteer and professionals, people with disabilities and those with qualifications and without. Suffolk Sport has consulted with many employing partners from across the leisure, health and sport sector to enable us to better understand what qualifications are needed and what the employment opportunities/gaps are. As such, those who are successfully recruited to topcoach academy will be provided with bespoke and innovative training (provisional list attached).

What do I need to do?

If you are interested in being part of the Topcoach Academy  then please complete the very simple

expression of interest survey by 29th July 2016. If you're are a successful applicant you will expected to attend a two hour induction event in mid September and commit to attend at least 3 CPD events (each approximately 3 hours in length) between October 2016 – Jan 2017*.

How much does it cost?

Suffolk Sport have been able to find a substantial amount of funding to support Topcoach Academy  in year 1 and as such, cost of participation has been massively subsidised:

·£10 for students or those who are not in education, employment or training (NEET)

·£25 for volunteer coaches / instructors (receive no payment for their services)

·£40 for professional coaches/instructors

As well as free access to CPD events, you will also be provided with a free Adidas T-Shirt and access to other Adidas clothing at a significantly reduced price. The total value of this package is £300.

* Please note that the majority of the courses that we will be offering will be hosted at a central location for the county (Suffolk Football Association office, The Buntings, Stowmarket, IP14 5GZ).

Hopefully this email provides you with enough information to submit your expression of interest but if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact me (details below) or Simon King (Coaching Development & Primary School Support,simon.king@suffolksport.com, 07725 498020); also keep an eye out for updates via the following social media feeds:

JULY 2015 Two
(Click HERE for July 2015 One)

Dear All,

Please see below for an update on Local Coach Development opportunities that will be available in 2015-2016.

Local Coach Development Plans 2015 to 2016

I am pleased to be able to tell you of some of our plans for coach development opportunities through the autumn/winter of 2015/16.  The aim behind England Athletics’ plans stays exactly the same, to deliver high quality coaching development with the aim of supporting coaches to deliver great training and improved results.  The local contact for the development opportunities is either the Club and Coach Support Officer, or for endurance coaches, you also have the option of contacting your local Area Coach Mentor.  We will advertise all workshops and programmes on the England Athletics website or directly to clubs as the dates come close.  To give a flavour of what is being organised please see below and pencil in a few dates to your winter diary.

1. Movement Skills in running, jumping and throwing.  A series of workshops managed by the CCSO’s, targeted at the Coaching Assistant level but open to, and of interest to, all coaches working in clubs.  These will be organised locally by each CCSO and delivered by coaches on the National Coach Programme or Coach Education Tutors.  They will contain practical work on delivering coaching to club athletes from the perspective of quality movement – How do we move? How do we move better? How do we jump, hop, throw?  How can I apply this in my coaching?  There will be three workshops over the winter, each one a standalone but each slightly more progressive and containing additional information.  Dates are to be announced locally and through www.ulearnathletics.com. These Movement Skills workshops will be free of charge, but spaces will be limited.

2. Regional Technical Days.  Six workshops taking place on 7th, or 8th November 2015 at different locations around the country and another 6 workshops on 19th March 2016.  These practical workshops delivering technical ‘what to coach’ material will be delivered by National Coach Mentors and National Coach Development Programme coaches with the aim of supporting the technical content contained on the Athletics Coach or Coach in Running Fitness qualifications, but also adding to the knowledge and practice base of established coaches.  A morning session in November on psychological aspects of training and coaching (nutritional aspects in March), will be followed by 4 hours of practical work delivered in event groups i.e. throws, speed, endurance and jumps.  Coaches will choose one event group and cover all events within that event group.  Hammer and Pole Vault coaches will be catered for in a separate morning session.  Venues to be announced shortly, booking through www.ulearnathletics.com. The Technical Days replace the regional conferences following feedback that coaches wanted practical content delivery.  A charge of £20 will be made for the Regional Technical Days and places will be limited.

3. Local workshops organised to meet local coaches needs organised by CCSO’s will continue.

4. The Flying Coach Programme, where clubs can call on a CCSO to ask for a coach to visit their club will continue.

5. Support Coaches.  We are working to put in place a team of coaches who will be accessible to Coaching Assistants and Athletics Coaches, as well as other registered England Athletics coaches.  CCSO’s will hold a list of local support coaches who have agreed to be available to be shadowed in their home coaching environment by developing coaches.  They will not offer advice on completing the coach education courses but will be accessible to be shadowed and pass on their experience through their own coaching practice.  The aim is that coaches would not just access a coach in their own specialist area but might as an endurance coach go and shadow a throws coach to pick up tips on structuring a session, use of language, motivation and warm ups and reflective practice.   We aim to announce the programme in the autumn.

6. Facebook coaching groups.  We are currently trialling a Facebook group as an information and discussion exchange for local coaches.  If it is successful we will open up Facebook groups locally with the aim of creating an online community of coaches in a local area.

7. Meet the Head of Coaching and Coach Development & Education Manager. Martin Rush and Paul Moseley will be hosting an open session from 12noon to 12.30 at the England/AAA Senior Championships on Saturday 1st August 2015 and at the England U15/U17 Championships on 29th August 2015.  Look out in the Championship programme for details and on the England Athletics website.

I’ll keep you updated with local opportunities once further details are confirmed, however if in the meantime there are any specific workshops/flying coach visits that you would like to see organised locally then please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Tania

I am e-mailing with regards to the opportunity for your club / volunteers to form links with the Sport and Events Volunteering Project – this is a county wide project supporting Suffolk's campaign to become England's 'Most Active County', through the continued development of event volunteering opportunities throughout Suffolk.

Suffolk had over 200 volunteers (Games makers) involved with the 2012 Olympic & Paralympics, with a large number actively involved with this project. As well as individuals inspired by large scale sporting events, the project is keen to support a wide range of individuals in finding suitable volunteering opportunities. Over 200 events have been supported by the project's volunteers, with an estimated 7,000 volunteer hours provided, ranging from large scale events such as the Great East Swim, Cancer Research Race for Life and Ipswich Half Marathon to smaller community events requiring just a handful of volunteers.

Specific aims of the project are:

Dear All,

The UKA Competition Steering Group is conducting a consultation regarding the proposed age group changes and would be grateful for feedback from local coaches. The aim is simply to get feedback from coaches on the age groups and their views on whether adopting an IAAF model would be beneficial or not (England Athletics are not endorsing a particular stance). Should you wish to put forward your views/feedback, please return the attached template by the deadline of 25th May.
